Dutch crypto startups in ongoing discussion with regulators

The EU’s AMLD5 comes into law this January and Dutch authorities are pushing ahead with stringent additions.

Under the new rules, crypto firms are expected to pay for their own supervision costs and undergo a registration process.

Dutch crypto startups say these additions are meant to address contributing factors in the 2008 banking crisis and they impede the development of a native blockchain industry.

Virgil Griffith to be released from jail pending trial

Virgil Griffith, who was arrested on 29 Nov. for allegedly helping the North Korean regime to “use cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to evade sanctions”, will be released from jail pending trial.

Even Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin stepped forward to help free Virgil Griffith.

Bitfinex announced support for Lightning Network deposits and withdrawals becoming the first exchange in the industry to do so.

The Lightning Network is a second layer solution to Bitcoin’s scalability problem and enables faster and cheaper transactions.
