Bitcoin Close To 10'000 Mark

After trading sideways for 2 days, Bitcoin continued the upwards price movement yesterday, rising another 5 percent and currently trading at $9,700, eyeing at the psychologically important $10,000 mark. The largest cryptocurrency has constantly pushed up in price and it’s current yearly high lies around 300 percent higher than at the start of the year, when it’s price sat at $3,200. Most top 20 Alt-Coins followed the price movement of Bitcoin. Ethereum was up by almost 7 percent, currently trading at $285 and coming close to the $300 mark. Binance coin was the top performer of the day, up 7.5 percent and hitting a new all time high of $37.40.

Bitcoin Hashrate Hits New All Time High

The Bitcoin hashrate has hit a new all time high today. The hashrate has been constantly gaining over the week and currently sits at 65.19 trillion hashes per second (Th/s). A high hashrate makes the network more safe against attacks, as it becomes more and more expensive to conduct a 51 percent attack, as hackers need to control at least half of the hashrate. The high hashrate can be linked to the upwards price movement, with mining rewards increasing if the price of Bitcoin goes up.

Florida City Pays $600'000 Bitcoin Ransomware Demand

Bitcoin has long been praised for it’s privacy features and the anonymity of transactions is one of the reasons why it became so popular. However this feature is often used by hackers to press money from people by infecting their computers with ransomware, which they only remove, if the victim pays a certain amount of Bitcoin. A Florida city has been the last victim of such an attack. Hackers infected the whole administration network of the city and even infected emergency services, meaning that no 911 calls could be taken by employees. The city has already agreed to pay the $600,000 ransom to the hackers and has decided to upgrade it’s cyber security.
